“Linda does so much more than ‘take pictures.’ Her camera connects with the subjects in a personal way. She doesn't just photograph faces; Linda somehow reaches into souls. She takes the pain and fear, the joy and tragedy, the sadness and sense of wonder - whatever her subjects are experiencing - and she somehow captures it in the photograph. Linda's work allows one, perhaps forces one, to establish a link with the photograph, and they suddenly become treasures. Thanks to Linda Panetta, I am rich beyond measure with "treasures" from around the world.” - Bishop Thomas Gumbleton

The Global Food Crisis: Images from Overseas
Cabrini College alumna, photojournalist and human rights activist Linda Panetta ('88) uses her voice and her camera to share stories of people in countries around the world who are suffering because of war and repressive policies by their own or other governments. These images, selected from Panetta's ever-expanding “Optical Realities” project, show the role of state-sanctioned violence, corruption, environmental degradation, and discrimination in causing long-term "food insecurity." Regions where war is endemic, where government cares only for those with power or money, are places where subsistence farming may not be possible, where markets are disrupted, and where children can't count on receiving regular meals. The age of many is masked by years of malnutrition. And many children are so weakened by hunger that even minor infections or diarrhea can cause death. There are images here, too, of creative solutions to the food crisis. Collective projects where families pool resources to improve living standards.
Panetta's photos take us to places many viewers may never have been, in person. But in their clarity, in the direct views they give us into other people's eyes, these photos connect us with those places and those people. We are, in the words of Catholic Relief Services, "one human family."

Exhibit Title:
"Living in the Shadows of War;
finding hope in the laughter and dreams of children."
Rincliffe Gallery, 3rd floor Main Building
Month of April 2007
The photos in this exhibit are taken from the collection of photojournalist, Linda Panetta. Over the past 20 years, Linda has traveled throughout Latin America and the Middle East focusing her work on cultural, environmental and human rights with a particular emphasis on conflict zones including: Guatemala, Colombia, Nicaragua, (Chiapas) Mexico, El Salvador, Haití, Argentina, Chile, Perú, Uruguay, Ecuador, Panamá, Venezuela, Afganistan, Iraq and Palestine.
Her goal is to use her work to raise public awareness about world events, cultures and the environment. She seeks to use her first hand knowledge and experiences in impoverished - war torn areas of the world to advocate for economic and social justice.
In her work, Linda captures the daily realities of life of the people she advocates for. "When looking though the lens of a camera, you're ever so present to the details of one's face: the smirks, smile and frowns; the wisdom and age that accompany the sun baked wrinkles, a depth of sorrow, joy uncertainty, curiosity and oneness in the eyes." Her vivid yet simple photographs speak a thousand words and hope to inspire and move others to act - to love all others as we would love a member of our family.
Throughout this exhibit, see the beauty, sorrow, joy, the prevailing sense of hope for a better tomorrow, and share it with others.
Catch a glimpse of the world around you and its very soul in photojournalist's, Linda Panetta, awe inspiring images. Bruce Cockburn is an internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter. In 1979 his first major hit, "Wondering Where the Lions Are," marked the beginning of Bruce's career. Throughout the 1980's Bruce produced some of his most emotionally powerful music; songs like "The Trouble With Normal," "Lovers In A Dangerous Time," and "If I had a Rocket Launcher" - which he wrote after a trip to Chiapas in which he watched helicopters bombing Guatemalan refugee camps. These songs capture Bruces's deeply-felt commitment to social justice, a theme that resurfaces in "Call it Democracy," "Waiting For A Miracle," and many others. Bruce Cockburn has produced 28 albums - 20 gold and platinum records - and he has received numerous awards both in North America and overseas, including the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Italy's Tenco Award for Lifetime Achievement.

"Dreams & Nightmares: Life and Death in Iraq"
> July 1 - 4, 2006
> Independence Park, Philadelphia
[Across the street from the Visitors Center (between Market and Chestnut streets), on the slate terrace opposite the Liberty Bell pavilion). Click here for a map of the area.]
The exhibit is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each of the three days.
Dreams & Nightmares - a memorial to Iraqis who have died in the war and occupation - is part of AFSC's widely acclaimed Eyes Wide Open exhibit of combat boots and civilian shoes, commemorating all U.S. and Iraqi deaths in the war. Combat boots representing the 122 Pennsylvanians who have lost their lives in this war will be displayed in conjunction with the July 1-3 exhibit.
Photos and personal stories are vividly displayed on 8-foot-tall free-standing panels which illustrate the often unseen side of the war in Iraq; their hopes and dreams & the tragedies and nightmares that are part of daily life for Iraqis.
The color photos -http://www.afsc.org/eyes/experience-ewo.htm - that are part of the exhibit were taken by Philly-based human rights activist and photojournalist, Linda Panetta.
Why was this exhibit created? Unlike U.S. war dead, most Iraqis who have died in this war remain invisible to the U.S. public, with their numbers increasing daily. Careful estimates run as high as 100,000-plus. The very fact that there is no way to know the exact number reflects the devastation and chaos that is life in Iraq; a painful contrast to the dreams both Iraqis and Americans had when Saddam Hussein's regime ended three years ago.
This memorial exhibit reminds us that grieving for our families and friends who have been killed, injured, or traumatize by violence is the same all over the world… and amidst the suffering, people continue to maintain hopes and dreams of a brighter future.
Visitors are invited to enter the exhibit, view the pictures, read about Iraqi lives, and reflect on those things that bind us all together.
To view photos of the exhibit when it was displayed recently in Washington, DC & Columbus, Ohio visit: http://www.opticalrealities.org/AFSCexhibit/Photos.html
To view additional photos by Linda Panetta from Iraq and other war & conflict zones visit our homepage: http://www.opticalrealties.org/
Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, including greeting visitors and handing out literature and are requested to sign up for four-hour shifts: 8 a.m. to 12 noon, 12 noon to 4 p.m., and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m (four or more volunteers are needed for each shift).

Alumna's photos expose war
Ryan Cox
Issue date: 4/1/04 Section: News
Not until the mid to late 1800's was war documented with anything other than word-of-mouth or newspapers. At this point in history, a new form of documentation came about; photojournalism.
A field that has created much interest among many people in recent years has indefinitely given photographers the ability to document war, from its grotesque reality, to its most pivotal moment. Cabrini will have one of these photojournalists, Linda Panetta, speak today, April 1, in the Widener Lecture Hall. This speaker is not only the main attraction for all English/communication majors career development class, but this particular photojournalist is quite distinctive. Panetta is not only Cabrini College alumni, but also a well-respected photojournalist. Having remained an active photographer for many years, Panetta will speak today about her most recent venture, documenting the war in Iraq. Upon visiting Iraq in Jan. 2004, Panetta claims that the American public has been duped into believing that things are getting better.
Students who are interested in attending today's lecture hall presentation with Linda Panetta are welcome to attend. The presentation begins at 3:10 p.m., and concludes at 4:25 p.m. The meeting is not limited to only English/communication majors. The department is expecting a large number of people to attend because other area colleges were invited to hear Panetta speak.

Human rights advocate and photojournalist, Linda Panetta, traveled to Afghanistan (June 2002) and Iraq (January 2003 & 2004) documenting the experiences of the people in the midst of conflict. The exhibit is a beautiful and moving portrayal of the communities that endure even after the press has moved on. It highlights the persistence and complexity of their struggle. The week's events provoke critical questions of whether the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are over, and whether the interventions were "successful", righteous, and justified.

Photographer’s Exhibit Depicts Human Rights Issues Worldwide
By Katie Walsh
Huron -
Linda Panetta has thousands, maybe even millions, of brothers and sisters.
Panetta, who travels the world as a journalist and human rights advocate, feels a close bond with the people she encounters and photographs.
“These people around the world are our brothers and sisters,” Panetta said. “The soldiers fighting in Iraq , and the people being massacred in Latin America . I would do anything I could to help them.”
Panetta spoke to students and staff at BGSU Firelands on Wednesday and Thursday. While presenting a slideshow of her work from countries like Guatemala and Chile , she encouraged attendees to travel the world and think critically about how the United States operates.
Panetta tends to travel to countries that have been ravaged by war, whether civil or international. Her safety is often at stake, but Panetta, who has traveled to both Iraq and Afghanistan since the United States invaded them, says the risks are worth it.
“In Iraq I wanted to document the people who would be the recipients of the bombs we dropped there,” she said. “The news media have shown a lot of my work, which lets people know about what’s going on throughout the world.”
Many of Panetta’s photographs depict children who have grown up surrounded by violence and know nothing else. Sara Rohrbacher, an 18-year-old Firelands student, said she was teary-eyed while watching Panetta’s slide show.
“This was really an eye-opener,” said Firelands student Alexa Walton, 19. “It was amazing to hear about these countries from someone who has actually been there.”
Panetta leaves for Palestine in a few weeks and hopes to document the realities of what happens in this war-torn land.
“The repression that’s taken place in Palestine is mind-boggling,” Panetta said. “What’s being reported in the media is so biased, and often it’s our tax dollars that are funding this repression and violence. People need to be made aware of that, and hopefully they’ll speak out against it.”
Panetta’s photography will be on display in the BGSU Firelands library until Feb. 20.
"Photographs Reveal Poverty"
By Jarrad Enslow / Staff Writer
Beginning Feb. 1, the Quick Center for the Arts (QAC) is displaying the work of photojournalist and activist Linda Panetta, who is working to bring human rights issues closer to home.
Panetta’s photographs are taken from around the work and will be on display in the QAC until March 1.
Panetta founded Optical Realities Photography, an organization using photojournalism and education to raise awareness of world events, cultures and the environment.
The photographs displayed in the QAC include photos from Bethlehem , Baghdad , Iraq , Afghanistan , Panama , El Salvador , Mexico , Guatemala and Haiti .
Each photograph shows different cultures of the world and some of the issues people of those culture deal with. One or two paragraphs accompany each photo to provide more information on the picture.
One picture displayed is from Kabul , Afghanistan . In this picture, a little girl is seen kissing her brother, and he has a large smile on his fact.
The accompanying paragraph for this photo explains that the children’s father had been killed in the war, and they are left homeless and without money.
Another photo on display is from Haiti . In this picture a group of young boys wait in line for younger children to finish eating so they can have the only hot meal they will have that week.
Some students said they appreciated this exhibition.
“There was one picture I really like,” said Chris Cole, a sophomore physical education major. “It was of a woman showing the identification cards of her missing family. The picture shows what the people of Iraq are going through. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like.”
The QAC added this exhibition because last spring the staff invited any professors with ideas for an exhibition to come to a meeting and discuss them, said Evelyn Penman, QAC curator.
“We were looking to add some exhibitions that would help diversify the exhibition schedule and at the same time go along with classes being taught,” said Penman.
The exhibition goes along with the Religion and Terrorism class, taught by Dr. Chris Stanley. Stanley knew of Panetta and wanted her work to be displayed on campus. He is also hoping for Panetta to give a lecture on campus, Penman said.
Panetta work has been displayed throughout the United States , Canada and Europe . Her work has also produced and directed an award-winning documentary titled “An Insider Speaks Out!” The documentary focuses on the abuses of the School of the Americas , a military training facility.
More of Panetta’s work can be seen on Optical Realities’ Web site.
The staff at the QAC has been working on other diversity projects, and it would like to increase them, Penman said. Reflections is a viewer-participation exhibit. One picture was hung in the front gallery, and the staff asked for viewers to comment on the picture.
Some students have shown interest in Panetta’s work and would like to see more similar works displayed in the QAC.
“I really enjoyed this exhibit,” said Brian Conant, a sophomore business major. “I think the photos show a lot of how people around the world are living and the issues they are dealing with. I think the QAC should display more exhibits like this one. Students can gain a lot from them.”
